How to Dispose of an Old Refrigerator Safely

Compare pickup and drop-off routes for an old refrigerator and understand why refrigerant handling changes the disposal plan.

An old refrigerator is not ordinary scrap. Choose a collection or drop-off route that accounts for the refrigerant, compressor oil, and other components before the appliance is recycled or disposed of.

Why the cooling system matters

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers are subject to safe-disposal requirements. The final disposer must ensure refrigerant is recovered before final disposal. EPA also notes that appliance owners can check with utilities, municipalities, retailers, and recyclers for available programs.

Do not cut a refrigerant line or try to vent the system. If a local program requires the refrigerant to be removed before acceptance, use a qualified service provider and keep any documentation the receiving facility requests.

Knoxville-specific choices

The City of Knoxville identifies refrigerators and freezers as items that can be disposed of at the Solid Waste Facility for a fee. Its bulky-waste guidance also says residents can take appliances to the facility, where qualified staff drain the appliance and safely dispose of coolant. Current rules, fees, hours, and payment methods can change, so check the City page before loading the appliance.

Before anyone lifts it

  • Empty food, shelves, drawers, and loose ice.
  • Disconnect water and electricity safely before pickup.
  • Measure the appliance and every doorway or turn on the route.
  • Protect flooring and clear children and pets from the path.
  • Tell the pickup provider about stairs, basement access, or a long carry.

If carrying and transport are the hard part, review refrigerator removal. For multiple appliances, the broader appliance removal service may be the better starting point.
